Absolute minimum should be 4GB (2 for OSX, 2 for Windows), but I really recommend boot camp rather than VM unless you have 8 GB RAM (4 each). Last note: If you're going to use a VM, make sure you have loads of RAM. I can run my Bootcamp partition (Windows 7 64-bit) as a VM inside OS X (Snow Leopard) with Parallels, but I find I prefer dual-booting (performance in Windows is still better on the bare metal). I'm running a 13" MBP with 8GB RAM and I dual-boot with Bootcamp. Some software that includes drivers (VPN clients, for example) is also "bit-specific" but most things of this type are now available as 64-bit.Īpplications, on the other hand, are still mostly 32-bit and run just fine on either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. 64 bit only makes a difference if you've got more than 4GB RAM to use on Windows (that means either Bootcamp and physical RAM, or if you're planning to allocate more than 4GB to a virtual installation).Ħ4-bit is generally the way to go unless you've got old scanners, printers, etc that may not have 64-bit drivers available.
